So I thought my keyboard was acting up, like maybe a control or option key had permanently depressed... but lo, I tried my girlfriend's keyboard and it didn't work either (but works on her computer). Here's what's going on:
It was behaving strangely in Pro Tools so I just rebooted and now when I try to log into my OS, the "Return" key actually enters a character in the password field as if it were a "letter key" instead of an command key... iow... it doesn't enter the password or "log in." I tried typing the password and clicking the Log In button and that doesn't work either. (I 100% know my password).
Did I accidentally switch to a foreign language or foreign keyboard configuration with an inadvertent key combination? I can't log in to even test it in Text Edit.
EDIT: Okay... I logged into my guest account (no password) and opened Text Edit and everything was fine. So... I logged out and tried logging back into my regular account and the Return key worked. Can anyone hazard a guess as to what happened?
