I bought one last year at a great price with MIR and have used it with my MBP 1.83. It does get quite hot but it works pretty well.
So far so good. The important thing is to get a better antenna. The one that comes with it only works if you live really close to a broadcaster. I got an active antenna, RCA for $39 amplified and needs to be plugged into an outlet.
Works great with that. I just bought a Sony 32 LCD HDTV and using the same antenna I get fantastic picture quality!

I was a skeptic at first but it turns out EyeTV sw works great with pretty much any receiver.

Thanks for the feedback. Is the heat a problem for the MBP as far as damage?

I am planning to plug in my cable. Will work?

Just use an extender cable to keep the warm Hauppauge unit away from your MBP. Temps should average about 55ºC to 60ºC under use, so well within spec.

I have a problem with mine where Eyetv sends the fans racing. Temps drop to 45ºC, so no danger of overheating, but I'd rather the fans dropped to normal speed.

Are there any free sw that will let it play on Mac?

Costco this on sale for $49 after rebate
