Have a 500 gb wd external hd that im trying to partition

So, I have a 500 gig western digital external hard drive that i want to partition so that i can install my current version of snow leopard from it. However, whenever i try to partition it it takes forever (a lot longer than partitioning should) and it always fails about half way through. This is a time machine drive, also. Does anyone know how i can troubleshoot this? Thanks
