In the past 6 years, I've done a lot of photography at skate parks. I've done some basic videos (around 100) using video from the Panasonic GH4 and related models. I didn't try to process 4K video after watching the computer suffer just trying to display it.

I was working in iMovie on a mid-2012 MacBook Pro, which got it done quickly, but without much else.

In 2018, I bought an HP gaming laptop computer and tried MAGIX Video Editor Plus. More recently, I got a huge deal on HitFilm Pro 14, which is about to be version 15. The special effects capabilities are mind-blowing for all being in one application.

I know that HitFilm Pro will work on a newer Mac but that's something I can't do right now.

Is it possible to work across operating systems and software, as long as everything is finished in the most capable application?

I don't think there's a seamless way to switch between workspaces/apps, no. It's near impossible that the data from each editor can be read by the other.

You could continually export the video and transfer the file between computers? Though that may be cumbersome and you'd lose editing abilities (and repeated compression may cause quality issues).

Well, I was thinking that certain clips might benefit from special effects or compositing, but not others.

It's probably just as well to learn HitFilm Pro as well as possible.
