Have I Missed Something in Time Machine?

Tried using it and get the fancy space background but the arrows don't ever seem to be clickable. The sidebar always only says Today and Now.

Have I missed a step?

Have had it on since Leopard was released over two weeks ago.

Sounds like it's not backing up. Go to TM preferences and check the "oldest backup" & "latest backup" info to see what's going on. It may never have completed the initial backup. If this is the case, I'd recommend starting over, and temporarily disabling all screensavers and sleep options, so that the initial backup (which can take several hours) can complete uninterrupted.
