Have iPad compress photos imported from the SD card?

Hey guys,

I going to get an unofficial camera kit (with USB and SD card connection) and I'm going on holiday so I'm going to save the best photos to my iPad each day.

However, I know the iPad imports the full quality photos and stores compressed versions of them for viewing but also the full size photos so you can sync them to your PC.

This will waste a lot of space. . . Can I set the iPad to just store the compressed versions in the photo app as opposed to the full versions?
