Hi there,
Sorry to have to ask such a basic question, but here goes.
I have a new Mac Pro and I'm connected to my Dell 23" UltraSharp display via the DVI display port (if that is indeed the port that takes the 15-pin plug).
There is only one of these DVI ports on the back of the Mac Pro.

My other display is also a Dell (the 27" UltraSharp); it comes with a cable I've not seen before, that I think is a DisplayPort cable. There's a port on the back of the Dell for this... but I can't see how it connects to the Mac Pro.

So can someone advise me here? Do I need to get
1. a DisplayPort>Mini Display Port connector (if there is such a thing)?
2. or do I need to get a second graphics card?

The one I've got in the MP is the 5870. If I get another one, should I get exactly the same thing?
(I do a lot of HD video editing, by the way).

Thanks very much,
malch

thank you Hammer. I love a nice, inexpensive solution!
Which display should I connect via the DVI, and which via the DisplayPort (or does it matter).

I would use DisplayPort with the 27" Dell as it has DisplayPort. That way you don't need to buy any other adapters. Just to confirm, does the cable that came with the display looks like this:

Connect the Dell U2711 to the Mac Pro with a miniDP to DP cable (or use the adapter Hellhammer linked to and then a DP to DP cable.

OP said he already has a cable that he thinks is a DP cable, thus I linked that adapter as you save nearly 3 bucks :p

Yes, that's exactly what the cable looks like. So you're right, I just need the adapter.
Off to get it now.
