??? have skype available at all times for iphone 3g???

Hey,
I have an Iphone 3G that is running version 4.2.1 (8C148) and firmware 06.15.00. I was wondering if there is a way to keep Skype running all the time? I know one option is Backgrounder and insomnia but i have a friend with a 3gs unlocked iphone which is running skype 4.0.1 and it has a push feature and allows him to stay signed in at all times. I am running skype version 3.0.1 which is the only version i have or can find. Is there a different version of skype available for 3gs phones and not for the 3G?
