Ever since I've had a Mac (8 months), I've had to enter my password every time I open Mail to get new emails. I can only assume this is because of some issue between Mail and Hotmail, but is there anything I can do to just get my mail automatically?

Passwords for Mail get stored in your keychain. Access to the keychain entries can be configured via the application Keychain Access (haha). If you set to allow Mail always access then you only get asked for your password in case the keychain is locked.
