Last night while browsing the forums, I was surprised to see people who reported a cracked "baffle" (the thin strip under the display glass with the MacBook logo". I was surprised because I thought this component was plastic, but it's actually glass. Apparently it's incredibly thin and fragile, and some reported that theirs cracked with no apparent cause. Of course, now I am a little paranoid that the one on my brand new 2020 MacBook Pro will crack at some point as well. I've found posts about it here and on other forums going back to the 2016 model. I'm curious if the issue was fixed on the 2020 models even though the component looks to be the same.

Attached is an image of what I am talking about (not my image - thankfully my Mac is fine as of writing this!)

Looks like a piece of dust was stuck on the palm rest near the hinge part and someone slammed the display extra extra extra hard.

There is like... zero tolerance for anything stuck between the display and the palm rest area. Before closing the display, you gotta make sure to wipe the palm rest or you'll be sorry. I learned it the hard way.

What happened in your case? Don't you think a "piece of dust" is a little ridiculous to be worrying about when closing a display on a premium laptop? I have never worried about wiping dust off of my MacBooks since my first one in 2009.

It was that piece of dust. It didn't crack the screen but it dented the screen and created a very noticeable crater.

Let's just say... certain pieces of dust are much stronger than the glass Apple is using.

That fracture looks like something was caught between the base and the screen when closing the screen. Could've been anything... debris... food. Maybe... If it's still in working order don't worry about too much, just place some electrical tape or something over it, no point wasting money to get it replaced.
