At the grocery store today, I walked by an empty cart in the vestibule and picked up a blue rectangle from it. Turned out to be some guy's iPhone (with jacket). So I put it in my pocket and did my shopping. Back at the car, just as I was about to try to figure out how to get it back to its owner, it rang. Store customer service had the guy there, so we met at the entrance and he was ever so happy to get it back.

What has your experience been with lost/found phones (iPhone or other)?

I'm glad he was happy and there wasn't a misunderstanding. I've heard stories of people getting their phones returned to them and being upset with the returnee / finder.

Someone left their iPhone on the counter in the shop I work in. They sent a text message to it with details how to contact them if found so we rang them and they came and got it, gave us a £10 tip to buy some beers which was nice.:D
