Is there an automated process that makes the program author
aware of iTunes reviews left by customers?
Obviously the author could go check with iTunes,
but the question is there because I'm interested in whether or not
as an end user, I should anticipate reviews will be read by the author.
Cheers, Art.

The app developer doesn't get an email or anything, if that's what you mean. Most of them keep track of their reviews in iTunes connect though. I know I do.

I have Distimo send me daily reports for free. They tell me how many total downloads I've had, how much money I've made, and about rankings I've got.

They don't include details like break down the numbers by app or region or include the text from the reviews, but it lets me know if I have any reviews I might want to look at on iTunes Connect.

I like App Annie. They send me a daily report with my downloads, ranking(if ranked), features(if any), and they also include review's inside the e-mail. Their website is also very helpful in tracking statistics of your own app, such as countries where downloaded, etc. I highly recommend them!
