Having a serious issue with 10.10.3

I did a clean install of 10.10.2 just now then straight updated to 10.10.3 without doing anything. Now I can't copy any files from my backup HD to my computer. The progress bar just starts and then locks up and never moves. I literally can't do anything with my backup files :(

scratch that, it finally moved and transferred over but it is taking FOREVER to transfer even word documents

been trying to transfer 350 megs for about 5 minutes now
