I have a 2007 MacBook Pro, recently the the monitor was acting wonky. It would go black and I had a smaller monitor that I would switch over to until the laptop screen returned.

Now when I turn it on I get the start up sound but no image from either the laptop screen or from the usb monitor.

So my question is: Is it worth taking to the mac store to confirm that monitor has crapped out or just try and fix it myself.

It's possible your unit falls into the nvidia issue. You can check under apple.com/support under the repair extension program and put your serial number in to see if it qualifies for this issue.

I took it in to the apple store and the "genius" says that it's the logic board because the diagnostic he tried to run wouldn't pull any info.

Is there any point in spending $450-500 to get a new board? 4 yrs and the logic board fails, is that what I should expect?

At this point your money would be better spent on a new MBP than a new logic board.
