I took a thirty second .m4a song, changed the file type to .m4r, then added that to my iTunes library. It appears in iTunes like this:

However I can't seem to transfer this to my iPhone 5C and use it as my ringtone. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

EDIT: I made a new .m4r of the song I wanted, right-clicked it this time and hit "Open with iTunes", which was the default anyway, but somehow this created a Tones library in my iTunes and solved the problem. I'm a genius!
