Having trouble with transitions between photos for project in iMovie HD

I tried doing what it said under Troubleshooting but it won't work. Is there a way to have a transition automatically between photos instead of manually putting them there? (kind of like iDVD). I did it individually but then it wouldn't work or the transition time between is too short.

If you use iPhoto to make the slideshow, are the transitions not suitable. I use iPhoto to make my photo slideshow, then export it as a video, then import to iMovie to add a music track, make chapters, etc. then use iDVD to burn.

Sorry if this isn't helpful, but it does save the time of putting in the transitions manually.
