Here are a couple of recent videos. The FAA enforces a 3000' altitude restriction for commercial helicopter operators, but official choppers can go as low as they please.

I'll be flying with Mick and Bruce Omori (the still photographer in the video, arguably the finest lava photographer on the island) next week, probably Wednesday or Thursday, D850 in hand. Doors off! I'll post a few images, if anybody wants me to.

Two nights ago I went to about 9000' on Mauna Kea, and among other shots, made this one. The lower set of lights is Hilo town. The eruption is about 40 miles from the camera position.
