uhhh... does it work? how much?
Yeah, KDX is an excellent p2p program. I used to have a server on it, it was literally the only free server there w/o bandwidth caps. Then I read Hinksley's articles on his soapbox, and now I refuse to touch KDX.

Why did you stop using KDX? And what is this about Hinksley's soapbox?

KDX works great. But, if you read the soapbox section at the Haxial website you may leave with an unpleasant taste in your mouth. Although professing to be a Mac user, the author seems to go out of his way to disprove anything Apple related. His latest rant is about the G5 LINK.

That said, in my experience, KDX Server and Client work exactly as advertised.

KDX is a piece of crap

The guy should get a clue and learn how to write a user-interface. The BS on the interface is different across platforms anyway so let's make a pyschadelic interface that behaves neither like Windows nor Mac apps excuse is just pathetic. Does this guy have wet dreams about making a KDX OS or what? Obviously, his ****ty p2p client has needs that can't be met by OSX and MFC UI routines (note scores of examples of programs that run on both platforms and that have standard interfaces on each platform). Move along, nothing to see here.

the guy writing the soapbox stuff makes a lot of valid points, and there ARE a lot of retarded, ignorant, hypocritical mac trolls out there. he does make some mistakes though, like this point about apple copying microsoft:

"In MacOS X, when you move the mouse over the close box in the window titlebar, it shows an "X" for the close box, a dash for minimize, and a plus for maximize, just like MS Windoze."

i also have noticed that some of those dumb raging zealots have dropped in on this thread. :)

This topic has already been dealt with in a previous thread on the G5. He is using pedantry to take away from the slogan "world's fastest desktop". He has made critical mistakes in his 'soapbox'. The Sparc is not a desktop, the SSE options were turned on and it is HE that is the troll. Rather than address the issues raised by those posting back, he chooses to ridicule and side-step them. Floating-point is a critical part of the processor as far as peformance is concerned and the posters never implied that an integer unit was not needed. This guy is an idiot and should go read some books on computer architecture, interface-design and marketing/advertising. The G5 is fast and right up there with the fastest in the world. Apple's slogan is fair advertising, given Apple's target user and customers can judge for themselves by trying one out. Had Apple said "highest SPEC rating in the world" he may have had a point but they didn't. I seem to recall Intel using a compiler for SPEC tests that is not available to the public for purchase. This *is* an example of shady tactics as SPEC tests must be done with a compiler that developers can purchase.

kdx's interface is fully skinable. download the aqua interface and quit complaining. you are missing out on the best client/server app available and a terrific community.

I have it and it sucks.

The layout of the app has issues. I know what Hinksley skinned it because it is easier to maintain multi platform support.

But IMO he could have done it more like HL (his old app) or something along those lines :)

Btw, I'm not missing out of anything I use Carracho and have 512 gigs of warez + community is much better on Carracho :)

In my opinion, the community sucks on both. Every server is run by some greedy SOBs who want stuff. I used to run a KDX server that wasn't BS, you just go on and d/l stuff as fast as the server's bandwidth allowed, but then I stopped because Hinksley pisses me off.

I remember the Pay it Forward movement on Carracho, that made it all worth while. Unfortunately, it ended, and its back to greedy SOBs.

To be honest, I can't stand the GUI. He has his little tissy fit about gui standards on his site, and I could care less. I've got an aqua skin on it right now, but I still don't use any Haxial products.

Heh. I even sent him a PM relating to exactly what you are saying.

Hey Aztek, check your PMs once in a while. :)

How closed minded of you. Do you burn books in your spare time as well?

The guy should get a clue and learn how to write a user-interface.

Seems to me he's written one that is far faster than anything found in OSX or Windows. Are you suggesting you could provide him with some lessons in GUI development? I'm sure he would appreciate the offer.

The Sparc is not a desktop

Again, I'm sure he would love some help from the master.

Seems to me you are a shameless Haxial employee. How much faster can you draw a button or widget in a point-and-click app? There's just no point, what OSX and Windows offer is general solution which is infinitely more flexible, consistent with the rest of the OS and easier from the point of view of the programmer. Unless you're drawing some fscked widget, why the hell would anyone prefer rolling their own widgets rather than simply drag something on from InterfaceBuilder.

If the author wants hints on how to do UI programming, he only has to look to Apple's Aqua guidelines book and a host of other books from Amazon. Same goes for computer architecture and whatever else tickles his fancy.

That a sparc can be put on a desk does not make it a desktop any more than driving around in tank on a highway makes that an SUV. I'm really not sure what you meant by the picture anyway. Does placing a PowerBook on my bed turn it into a pillow? At best, some sparcs are workstations but Sun doesn't manufacture anything that anyone would class as a desktop machine.

I'm not claiming to be a master but there are some basics that one would expect anyone with a bit of competency in cutting code to have. Principles like software reuse and RTFMing before rolling your own.
