HD icon and drives on desktop

I always had my HD shortcut on my desktop in SL, and liked how my external drives appeared on the desktop.

Now, they don't, and are hidden away in Computer - which is not even shown in Finder and you have to select it from the Go menu.

Anyone know how can I get it back the way it was?

In SL they had an option in its preferences to enable that check to see if it still is there in Lion if so enable it.

Finder prefs, but why the hell would you want that on your desktop? Is this 1995 again?
