I have seen a lot of screen shots of lion i have noticed that none of them have the mac hd icon in the right upper hand corner. i was wondering is this an option to hide it or does it just use the app folder in the dock now.

Finder -> Preferences -> Uncheck "hard disks" under "Show these items on the desktop".
