HD issue

hello everyone, im new here and hope someone can help me out. i have a 2006 imac 20" m2205. i had to temporarily replace the PSU with a ATX but it would not boot up properly. i read that it might be heating problem so i removed the HD and connected it externally via USB even though it did not feel overheated. now it works perfectly but you all know that this is not the way it should be. if this problem can be solved than i can reinstall the HD internally and look for a PSU.
looking forward to any and all suggestions.
