Evening.

Does anyone have any experience converting HD .mkv files to mpeg/mp4?
Seeing as the Apple TV will be out soon, I want to make all my HD films iTunes ready so they can be streamed to my Hi-Def TV.

What codecs & settings would people recommend to keep original quality & file size? VisualHub is my preferred software, but am certainly open to other programs if people have some good methods of converting.

Thanks in advance.

I would recommend a program called VisualHub. It's not free, but it isn't that expensive, 20 or 30 bucks I think, and it'll turn anything into anything else. I just ran a test converting .mkv to an h.264 mpeg and it worked fine.

i think there may be open source solutions out there, but this program does exactly what you're looking for.

One thing to watch out for, and maybe this is obvious, but re-encoding HD video requires some serious horsepower. So, don't be surprised if these conversions take a while.
