HD movies from iMac to 42in 720p HDTV

hi, im pretty new to this, but am i able to play movies from my computer that are in HD format, to my HDTV with getting the quality of say an HD-DVD or a blu-ray disc?

i know i heard something about itunes allowing you to stream HD movies but say i got the files from a friend that burned the movies to his computer from a HD burner, can i play they on my tv without losing quality and it still being in full HD?
