hd space getting lower by itself

I sent an email with a 2gb attachment to someone today using mail that comes with the macbook. After I selected send, my computer starting lagging and I noticed that the hard drive was losing space every 30 second or so. Before I sent the email I had about 24gb of free space and after about an hour the email still hadnt showed up in my sent messages but my free space was 14gb. The math doesnt really add up. What is going on here?
