HD TV connected to MacBook Pro half works

I have connected my 17" MacBook Pro to a Sharp (full) HD TV using a HDMI to DVI cable.

The desktop background shows beautifully but no applications display. If I open photos or play a pdf slidshow on the laptop the TV screen continues to display the desktop backbround.

Have I missed something?

Are you using mirroring? What does your displays menu say?

Do the applications open on the laptop display? What happens if you attempt to drag a window from the laptop display onto the tv?

I've got a macbook hooked up via dvi to a 1080p westinghouse and it works fine, so I wouldn't worry too much. It's probably just an unusual setting you need to change.
