Ok well I edit videos on my PM G5 and have them all stored on a LaCie External drive which is the 160GB version. When I move the playhead in FCP or in iMovie it makes loud noises. Is it ok for it to be doing this? Any advice in how to maintain it? Thanks.

What kind of loud noises? Like normal, loud hard drive noises? or like loud clicking, clunking, or scratching noises?

Loud clicking noises
That's not a good sign. Loud clicking noises coming from a hard drive in use are indicitive of a failing drive, and you should back up all your stuff (to dvd, your main hard drive, or another external, doesn't matter) as soon as possible. Open up disk utility (applications>utilities>disk utility) and check the lower right hand corner of the window for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive. It should (and will probably) say "verified". If not, there's a huge chance the drive is going to fail sometime soon.
