I have a mac mini, pioneer elite sc-61, and an epson HD8350 projector. When the projector is on you can not select the sc-61 as the audio output. If the projector is off you can, if I hook a tv up to the receiver the audio will pass to the receiver. (mac>hdmi>sc-61>hdmi>tv). It seems if the end source does not have hdmi audio, the mac will not allow you to use/select hdmi audio. I have a 15" retina that has the same result. I read somewhere that the mac sees the final source only for the audio.
