I have a macbook that is hooked to my lcd tv via an hdmi port. I've been watching netflix and hulu this way for months. The other day my macbook froze and I had to reboot it and since then when connected to the tv, the tv only shows my background. It doesn't show any of my windows that I have open. Are there settings on the mac or the tv that I should be fiddling with to fix this?? I don't want to buy a new cord or an apple tv unnecessarily. Thanks!!

Were you mirroring your MacBook display before (the TV and computer both showing the same display)? If so, it sounds like maybe your display settings might have changed to have the HDMI output provide extended desktop instead of mirrored. If you go to the Display settings, you can check to see if mirror is selected.
