iPhone XS HDMI output format messed up on iPhone XS

I like streaming sports with the WatchESPN app to my big screen TV. I use the Lightning-to-HDMI adapter to interface with my TV. When I do this with the iPhone XS, I get black bars around the entire picture, and the video only fills a small part of the screen. When I do the exact same thing with an old iPhone 6, the entire TV screen is filled (and it obviously looks much better). Is this just because the WatchESPN app hasn't been updated to work properly with the XS? Or is there a video output setting somewhere that will fix this?
