HDMI output -versus- Composite Cable output

I know that the HDMI has a resolution max of 1080p, but aren't all HD iTunes movies at 720p. Wouldn't Apple's component cable serve the same purpose of the HDMI cable?

Subject line should say Component instead of Composite!!
