Right, so I have my little crew, and we are trying to record a few clips for a short film.
Everything up to now is fine, but we came across the idea of using my Mac as a Separate stream display, so we could adjust and film with more precision, than looking at the tiny screen directly on the camera.

So it would look like this:

Camera, with HDMI out > Macbook Pro 13" Retina 2014

My initial idea was to just plug it in, but as HDMI on a laptop is out only, that isn't possible. Now my idea was, if I can simply take a special Thunderbolt adapter with a usable HDMI in-capability.
But i do not know if it can handle it or it even exists. A little lag doesn't really matter. As it is for monitoring only, and we do not plan on actually recording with it. It is just for quality check.

Does anyone have experience with it?

So far I have only found threads talking about using the Mac as a gaming display for their PS3 or similar. But as we don't want to do anything like that, and delay in the video isn't a primary factor, we wanted to know what the best solution for us would be. We did use this feature on a simple TV and streaming was superb, but as it can be hard to pack a TV with a working power plug to the site of recording, we thought of using a laptop.

Budget is more or less tight, so if we can keep the cost down, that be great. And mobility is also a factor, as I would prefer to be able to move around with the camera to follow any movement.

Thanks :D

What you want is most likely a capture card.

Don't know how good any of them are. Don't know if any work correctly on a Mac.

But here's one to get you going.
