Anyone have ideas of how to convert an HDMI output to include HDMI and optical - is there an adapter that could do this - any ideas would be appreciated!

Are you looking to do this on the AppleTV? That device has both HDMI and Optical outputs. And most devices with HDMI out also offer optical out...

Am I missing something? (And I don't believe such a converter exists, at least, not one that simple).

And to clarify some more, you can usually send video through the HDMI and audio through the optical output separately. If that is your issue, you should not need any converters - just make the proper adjustments on your source player to not send the audio through HDMI.

Why would you want to separate audio from HDMI? Just curious.

Yes. I've never used them but here's an example of one: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...10114&cs_id=1011412&p_id=10251&seq=1&format=2

There are lots of different versions of this sort of thing. For example: DVI + digital audio -> HDMI and vice versa.

However, I'm curious if you really need such a product.

It's for when one wants to send the video from an HDMI source to a display device and the audio to something else (e.g. receiver that doesn't support HDMI). However, source devices will usually let you have both an HDMI and digital audio port enabled at the same time.
