HDMI to HDTV audio

I kno this question must have been asked a million times but i need help. I'm a fairly new macbook user so i dont rly kno the technical features. When i connect the HDMI to the Samsung HDTV, audio from the tv only works with iTunes. The audio doesn't work when i try to play movies. I use VLC media player. anyone kno y this happening?? any help is appreciated
