So I got a pleasant surprise with the news that HDR will also be available on the iPad Pro and any HD films will be upgraded to 4K and HDR. The Pro needs to also be running iOS11.

So I have an iPad Pro 10.5, it is running the GM of iOS11 and even though my iTunes library is lacking* I still have an HDR ready release: the Star Trek reboot from 2009. It had a new Dolby Vision logo which I hadn't seen before and Googled to confirm it is HDR tech. I go to settings to ensure the tick box is selected but then after I clicked play, it dawned on me. I have no idea what I'm doing. I have yet to upgrade any of my screens to 4K let alone HDR**. I get in theory that HDR allows for darker parts of a shot to appear alongside the brightest parts of a shot, making the image more true to life rather than washing out the image as a whole with darkness and brightness. However, understanding something in theory and seeing for yourself if something else together. A few questions.

What am I looking out for exactly?

Should I play the same film on say an Air 2 and Pro 10.5 to appreciate it?

Any films people recommend? I might purchase Life of Pi

*because I prefer physical media, and the digital downloads have gone to UV which is annoying since is split my digital catalogue but that is a tangent for another day.

** Waiting for the right investment. I can appreciate 4K over HD but I feel like I'd need a giant screen to appreciate the increase in resolution plus OLEDs are still a bit pricey in the UK. And from my understanding, HDR is the bigger upgrade as to borrow someone's words, it's not just more pixels but better pixels.
