Confirmed: Joel Silver Developing He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Live Action Movie

Last week The Sun ran a story claiming that Legendary Pictures (one of the production companies behind Superman Returns, 300, Batman Begins and The Lady in the Water) has acquired the rights to make a new live action He-Man movie, and were considering Brad Pitt for the lead role. We called the production company, and confirmed the story as a ridiculous rumor (and nothing more).

Well, the increased internet interest has prompted Joel Silver and Warner Bros to sign on to develop He-Man and the Masters of the Universe for the big screen. Variety has confirmed that newcomer Justin Marks (who is currently writing Super Max) is penning the script. But this doesn’t mean the film is going to happen. Mattel has to formally approve an outline for the project before it can go forward. But considering the gold and glory Mattel will surely see in July from Michael Bay’s live-action Transformers adaptation, I don’t see how they could say no.

First, the Dukes of Hazzard, then Transformers, now He-Man.

Voltron and Thundercats are probably next.

One day they'll run out of things to re-make and the post-modern era will be over.

There was a live action He-Man back in the 80's. I wonder if this is going to be a remake, re-invisioning, sequel, or prequel? :D

I seem to remember that. Although I'm having trouble finding it on IMDB.

Here it is: Masters of the Universe

I'm hoping for sequel...Dolph is 50 this year, would be interesting to see him go through a He-Mid-Life-Crisis. A prequel could be interesting as well...seeing an awkward He-Teen with his He-Acne..."By the power of Clearasil" :p

I wonder if HE-Man and She-Ra will still be together.

Sadly, I'll probably base my excitement about He-Man on the quality of Transformers. That said, I'm already far less excited about He-Man than I am about Transformers...any idea who'll play He-Man?

Edit: Oops, should've read the post above me :) Pitt?! No way, he's a waif compared to He-Man.....

My apologies to any He-Man fans on these forums, but I can't think of a worse thing to base a movie on.

when reading the original posting i thought "who are they gonna cast ? arnold or dolph lundgren ? they are way too old" then i clicked on the imdb link

you know back in the day i really dug some he-man. but i think they don't need to go and remake that. i mean come on what about GI-Joe!

i mean come on what about GI-Joe!

I mean come on, what about a good movie idea for a change? With most movies these days I could tell you whether or not it had a chance to be any good just by hearing the title, and for most of the remaining ones the plot summary would be enough.

They should make a Care Bears movie. Here's what is going to be the big "draw" for people who think it's a stupid idea: Instead of CGI, they use real, caring bears!

They also need to count down from 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.... before they start to care.

I'd be interested to see a list (or even a count) of all the movies in the past 2 years that have been either based on a previous work (comic book, 80s TV show), an out-and-out remake of something old, or some combination thereof.

I'd be excited to see that when it comes out. Especially since the first movie was so horribly bad, I think they'd learn from their mistakes and put out a better product this time around. And you just know She-Ra will be in it!

But I'd much rather see a GI Joe film first. As soon as they figure out how to recreate a flight pod in real life that is.

As one of my undergrad writing teachers told me several times, "Everything has been done at least once." I guess it applies to Hollywood even more so as these days it seems they care less about telling a good story and more about getting butts in seats and collecting ticket money.

Don't forget the new Ninja Turtles film. It's all animated this time, though - no Muppet suits.

I don't mean derivative works like "based on a true story" or anything like that, but OBVIOUS, clearly taken straight from a previous work (300, TMNT, Transformers, He-Man, Miami Vice, etc etc)

Are you saying He-Man isn't based on a true story? You do know He-Man and Skeletor used to be BFFs, right?
