Does anyone know if an Intel iMac will boot if the internal LCD is disconnected, but there's an external LCD attached?

I do know that if a different internal LCD (as from certain G5, G4 or laptop LCDs) is swapped for the OEM internal, it will not boot, but I wonder if anyone has disconnected the inverter and data cables, but with an external attached to replace the internal LCD.

TIA

Yes

Yep because at my local Mac shop the service technicians have a smashed LCD screen on the intel iMac yet they boot it up and it runs on a different external monitor. I saw him running Mac OS X on a boring old screen and i said "how are you running OS X? a hackintosh?" and he shows me this giant 20 inch imac under the desk with a horrible smashed screen.
