Headphone jack not working well on MacBook Pro 13''

Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro 13'' late 2010. The headphone jack works when I plug in a 3.5 TRRS jack but does not respond when I plug in a regular TRS jack and just outputs the internal speakers. This is really annoying as I cant plug in my stereo or my headphones directly in unless I use my sound card. Please help. Thanks,
