headphone jack problem. one earbud/speaker works

i'm gonna go ahead and lay out what my problem is as briefly as possible

my speakers/sound work fine, but when i use the headphone jack only the left external speaker/earbud works (YES my sound is balanced and all that). i've tried all of the tips in this thread https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/237405/ and absolutely nothing has worked. now when i put the headphones in about 3/4 of the way, both earbuds work. so we know that they both CAN work.

oh, and the red light blinks once and only once when i remove the headphones from the jack. there isn't a constant red light flashing at my face.

any ideas?

I've also got this problem.
Am pretty sure that the contacts within the socket are bent so they're not contacting the jack correctly, but it involves getting inside, an onerous task.
If I knew which screws to undo, I'd have a go
