Headphone jack problems?

I have a 2012 MBP and all of a sudden I plug my headphones in and the computer doesn't pick them up? I've gone into sound settings and theres no pop up for headphones under output. I've tried unplugging the headphones in and out and restarting the laptop several times - not worked.
Briefly my earpods seemed to work but the quality was AWFUL. Whats happened? D:

Did you try SMC reset? I had the exact same problem as you did, but for some reason after an SMC reset, the computer detected my headphones
