Headphone not found in sound output and no sound from headphone jack

I have an intel iMac running 10.5.8.

The headphones sound output previously worked, however now I cannot find 'headphones' in the system control / sound / output pane, and subsequently when I plug in headphones or speakers they do not work - the internal speaker works fine though. The only sound output is 'Internal speakers'.

I'm not sure what triggered this, however may have been following the installation of Parallels Desktop.

Does anyone know how to get headphones back as an sound output option?
