headphones audio-in question?

well hi there im totally happy with my macbook don't care about the new one but i have a question when i plug in my headphones into my macbook it takes at least 3 second for the macbook to recognize it has the headphones in is this normal?

Could be.

It's checking for normal vs optical input, then turns on the minijack current.
