Headphones do not work in Macbook

Hello, I have had my Macbook for about three years now and just recently the headphone jack stopped working. When I plug the headphones in, I hear sound for about 5 seconds then it mutes. In system prefs. it says the output is headphones, so it reads my headphones but no sound comes out. There is no red light and I have tried other headphones, nothing seems to work. The headphone DO work in my Ipod Touch.
