So If I take my Apple headphones and put one of them over the left speaker, specifically on the bottom and left corners of the speaker grill it triggers my mac to go to sleep. I think it may have to do with the magnet inside the Apple headphones.

Very strange. I have the early 2011 15 inch base model.
 
There's a magnetic switch at that position in the Macbook Pro to tell it when you have closed the lid. Putting other magnetic objects (most speakers/headphones included) can cause it to trigger.

Someone posted the other day that their Samsung phone with NFC would trigger their MBP to sleep when placed on that corner.
