Based on my on tribulations with a DIY ext USB3 boot drive for my new iMac, it seems Macs are as picky about USB3 controller chips as it is with RAM.
It took me nearly a month (obviously not working on it 24/7) to figure this out. I tried every problem solving trick I knew of but nothing worked... until I tried a Seagate GoFlex adapter I had. Problem gone.
So my advice, don't buy a USB3 enclosure or hub unless you are certain the manufacturer has tested to work with Macs or at least guarantees it to work. While USB3 is a standard its clearly not a tight one. There is a lot of no-name product out there with boxes that state "Compatible with Mac," but it's only an empty statement.
