One of the tips I read to save battery life is to turn off the heart rate.. hmm well, no, this is one of the main reason I got the watch.
My question is, there is no way to have the heart rate reading when you want right? I mean it seems it keeps monitoring every few minutes but I would rather choose myself when but I don't see this option unless I'm blind

to save battery, the watch itself takes a heart rate every 10-15 minutes UNLESS you're in a dedicated workout, when it will constantly record the rate until you end the workout.

you can check your HR whenever you want by launching the heart rate app. it looks like a heart.

you don't need to turn it off. the battery life is fine. just use it as intended
