I am coming from a GARMIN Venu and before that I used a Fitbit Ionic. Both of those watches measure heart rate approximately once per second, all through the day. I have been reading up on the Apple Watch and I see that it only measures it every ten minutes when not working out. My question is, how can this provide accurate data? There is a lot that can happen between the start and end of ten mimutes. I could get up, walk around the block, and come back in and sit down, and it would miss all of that. I am confused how others can truly consider this a fitness watch and trust the metrics given when it measures one of the most important aspects of day to day life so I frequently. I do a lot of different things when I am not working out.

The way I use it is, if I want it to measure my heartbeat while I go walk around the block, I start a walking workout. Then, it measures my heartbeat constantly, until I stop the workout. I'm not really bothered that it doesn't track my heartbeat constantly when I'm not doing a workout, but the Apple watch is my first and only fitness device, so I suppose that's just what I'm used to.

I just looked in the data it captures. It measured 13 times in the last hour. Maybe it detects what you are doing and captures more/less often at times.

I get that more data seems better. I don’t know if it is really necessary though. If something happens to make you concerned about your heart, then do an EKG and show it to your doctor. They will likely get you a heart monitor to wear for a while. I don’t know how useful it would be to provide them with a ton of pulse data.

Been there done that. It’s one of the biggest reasons why I got so into fitness! :)

I hear ya. Maybe some doctor will come along and tell us more pulse data would be helpful. I’m guessing it also has to do with battery life.

Definitely one major reason

I am trying to find a way to measure average heart rate. I use the Health Auto Export app but it just gives you the average of the highest and lowest reading for the day which is not really a true average. Is there a way to export all readings for one day? If you can do that then you can compute a true average of a day.
