I have 2 MBP users and one has heat issues while the other doesn't. These are the two macbooks they are using:
- User 1 (with heat issues): MBP 13" 2018, 2,3GHz i5, 8GB, four TB3, Catalina
- User 2 (no heat issues): MPB 13" 2019, 1,4GHz i5, 16GB, 2 TB3, Mojave

Both users are doing the same: pretty intensive video editing in an online tool and Adobe Premiere. Memory pressure is OK in both cases. Fans come up, of course, but the 2019 model copes well. The 2018 model, on the other hand, copes for about an hour and then starts stuttering and freezing.

Any ideas what might cause this? Initially, I thought it was the 16GB, but because we're doing clips for social media, the memory pressure isn't a real issue. Can it be the TB3 or the macOS version?

If nothing else works you may have to take the back off to check for dust and lint obstructing the fans. Not that fun for recent MBPs, but there are online guides for it.

Hmm, not looking forward to opening the laptops up if I can avoid it. I've done it before but it's a hassle.

I was hoping somebody would be able to tell me if the 1 year difference (model 2018 vs 2019) would make a big difference? Or the Mojave vs Catalina?

People complain about Catalina, but not for this kind of thing as far as I've seen. I haven't heard of any great performance advantage of the 2019 13" either, more incremental, though I suppose that could reach a tipping point in some cases.

Have you tracked the heat etc to confirm whether it's heat throttling?
