Heat issues?

When I play games on Windows, at that times the game will lag to a standstill. The underside of my laptop gets uncomfortably hot. Is it because of heat that my games lag? I usually play Left 4 Dead 2 and Mass Effect on Windows.

Should I get a cooling pad as this is very annoying.
