The new health app takes some steps forward and backward.

Cycle tracking is good, but why does it show up for men? This is the sort of nicety Apple of old would have nailed but now cannot be bothered with.

The summary page has some useful aggregates. It is a nice view of what is going on.

They removed the arrows that allow you to review recorded data by calendar date periods. Before if I wanted to compare average weight in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 I could easily skip from year to year. Same with months and weeks. This is gone for no reason at all. You still have the option to review all that data but without the arrows it is much more difficult to get between defined periods. Now tracking by calendar year is much more difficult. This is a serious downgrade and like many iOS adjustments is capricious and reflects pointless change for change sake.

BMI— a derived data point still can be entered but cannot be derived. This is a persistent and ridiculous oversight.

The health app continues to evolve but often feels like a haphazard project with changing leadership and no one who actually understands health and it’s relevant measures.
