HEIC/HEVC format has been around already for almost 6 years and for Apple users 4 years by now, but Windows/Android still lacks of native support for them, And you cant even export HEIC format from Photoshop/LR or even the HTML standard doesnt support them, I'm wondering if all this means those formats are going to be in the drawer in the next years as other formats gone or could they became the new H.264/JPEG standards or will live just in Apple ecosystem (mostly iOS…)

Look no further than webp, which claimed to have huge potential but gains almost no support from the internet despite being around for years. Adobe Photoshop does not support it, nor does many websites that support image uploading. They almost always expect you to have JPG uploaded, some accepts GIF, PNG and that‘s mostly about it. For professional scene, webp is no different from JPG, so no point to support them.

This new HEIC format, like webp, will live within Apple ecosystem in the foreseeable future, maybe ever, no matter what amount of courage Apple has and how much support Apple has committed to implement for all of their devices and services.
